Ombria Golf Opens New Warm-Up Area

Great news for golfers planning a trip to the Algarve: as of 7 October 2026, Ombria Golf has officially opened a new practice and warm-up area for players ahead of their round. It is a welcome addition to an already outstanding golf experience in the hills of Loulé, and another reason to put Ombria at the top of your Algarve golf holiday list.

In this article, we cover:

What's New: The Ombria Warm-Up Area

The new warm-up area gives golfers a dedicated space to prepare their swing before heading to the first tee. It is just steps from the putting and chipping green, so you can work through your full pre-round routine in one place.

Highlights of the new practice area:

  • Up to 5 hitting bays for warming up before your round
  • Premium-quality artificial turf mats for a consistent strike
  • Practice balls provided, so there is no need to bring your own
  • Convenient location right by the putting and chipping green
  • Free of charge for all players

To give every golfer a chance to warm up, the club recommends sessions of no longer than 15 minutes. With capacity limited to five players at a time, we suggest arriving at Ombria with enough time to warm up comfortably before your tee time.

About Ombria Golf Course

Opened in 2023 as the first new golf course in the Algarve in a decade, Ombria quickly earned a place among the region's must-play layouts. Designed by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, this 18-hole, Par 71 course was built to work with the land rather than against it, weaving around ancient rivers and centuries-old trees.

Two Contrasting Nines

The front nine winds along the foot of sweeping hillsides, while the back nine opens out across a striking river valley. Water comes into play throughout, and the course rewards accuracy over raw distance. It is a fair yet engaging test for golfers of every level.

A Benchmark in Sustainable Golf

Ombria is one of the Algarve's leading examples of eco-friendly golf. The course has achieved GEO Foundation certification, one of the most respected sustainability standards in the sport, and native plants and trees have been reintroduced so that the layout blends naturally into the surrounding landscape.

The Clubhouse and Resort Experience

The experience at Ombria continues well beyond the 18th green. The clubhouse, built on the old walls of a historic ruin, offers a relaxed country-club atmosphere with a bar and restaurant, golf shop, heated swimming pool, sauna and gym. Its elevated terrace is the perfect spot for a refreshing drink and a light bite before or after your round, with wide views over the Algarve hills.

Ombria Resort is also a low-density, sustainability-focused development, offering a peaceful inland escape that contrasts beautifully with the busier coastal resorts.

Getting to Ombria

Ombria is located in the inland Algarve, around 7 km north of Loulé and roughly 25 minutes from Faro International Airport and the region's beaches. That makes it easy to combine with stays in Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo or Albufeira, and an ideal choice for golfers who want to explore the quieter, authentic side of the Algarve.

Tips for Playing Ombria

  • Arrive early to make the most of the new warm-up area, especially in peak season when the five bays may be in use.
  • Keep warm-ups short. Around 15 minutes is recommended so every player gets a turn.
  • Finish your routine on the nearby putting and chipping green before heading to the first tee.
  • Prioritise accuracy. Ombria's rivers and hillside terrain reward precision over power.
  • Book tee times in advance, particularly between autumn and spring, the Algarve's busiest golf seasons.
  • Stay for lunch on the clubhouse terrace and enjoy the views over the inland Algarve.
